The District Assembly was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 1853 of November 2007 with Atwima Foase as its District capital when carved out of the former Bosomtwe Atwima Kwanwoma District. The Twedie community disagreed with the selection of Atwima Foase as the district capital hence challenged the decision at Supreme Court. In May 2012, the Supreme Court ruled for change of Administrative Capital from Atwima Foase to Twedie.
